A 56-year-old Petaluma man was arrested early Sunday morning after passing out behind the wheel of his still moving car, with his foot resting on the break.
According to police, Rogelio Pelayo was driving his 2013 Ford truck in the 100 block of Payran Street when he passed out with his foot on the break, causing his vehicle to stop in the middle of the road. An officer driving by noticed the vehicle and attempted to awaken Pelayo.
The officer drove up to Pelayo’s truck, got out and knocked on the driver’s side window. Police said the officer noticed that Pelayo’s truck was still in drive and tried to signal for the man to shift out of drive.
Upon awakening, Pelayo appeared intoxicated and became combative, police said. When the officer tried to identify himself, Pelayo removed his foot from the break, causing his vehicle to begin moving towards cars parked nearby.
Though the officer told him to stop, Pelayo kept driving and collided with a parked Chrysler Sebring. Upon exiting the truck, police said Pelayo began to resist arrest and that the officer was forced to subdue him on the ground.
Pelayo was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and treated for a minor head injury.
He was charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
Pelayo was released at the hospital with a citation to appear in county court.
