An elementary school in Clearlake was on lockdown Wednesday after a school employee heard what was believed to be gunshots.

The Clearlake Police Department was notified at 12:50 p.m. Officials at Burns Valley School initiated a lockdown as a precautionary measure while eight or nine police officers checked the surrounding area, said Lt. Tim Celli.

One neighbor had heard gunshots, but others said they didn't hear the disturbance.

Officers found no evidence of gunshots and have no clue what caused the sounds, Celli said.

"It could have been a car backfiring, who knows," Celli said. "There were a few parents there, but nobody seemed worried."

The school ground was deemed safe and campus was re-opened about 20 minutes later.
