Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit officials said Wednesday that scheduled street closures to upgrade rail crossings in Santa Rosa have been pushed back a few weeks.

The arrival of a train bearing rails is forcing the delay, with construction resources being shifted to prepare for it.

“We have to get everything buttoned up for the arrival,” said SMART spokesman Matt Stevens.

Third Street just south of Railroad Road Square closed at the tracks in both directions Tuesday and will remain shut through Thursday.

But planned closures north of that have been postponed, probably until the second week of November. They will occur in the following order.

• Sixth Street.

• Guerneville Road.

• Ninth Street.

• College Avenue.

• Seventh Street.

• Eighth Street.
