Saturday's Letters to the Editor

No more donations

EDITOR: Note to self: Next time you receive a call from one of the many who ask for donations, apologetically say no. No, because the California voters just took all of the money I set aside for charitable contributions.

Kindly suggest they call a voter who supported Proposition 30 and explain that the money their vote took away from charities is not guaranteed to go to schools but instead to a fiscally irresponsible government.

In advance, I'd like to apologize to Meals on Wheels, the Cancer Society, the Humane Society, firefighters, veterans, family members, teachers, Bay Area youth sports, the Junior Giants, etc.

Testing drivers

EDITOR: The focus on the driving privileges and testing of older drivers misses the point. There are many older drivers who should not be driving, and there are also many who are very safe and good drivers. By the same token, there are lots of drivers of all ages who should not be allowed to continue to drive the way they do. Teenagers come to mind, but so do drivers of all ages.

Every driver sees this every day. Think about it: half the drivers on the road are worse than average.

Driving is a privilege, not a right. Driving an automobile assumes a huge personal responsibility. If you wish to maintain a private pilot's license, you have to undergo a physical exam and get tested on your flying skills and knowledge every two years. The easiest way to try to ensure that drivers are competent and familiar with the latest traffic laws is for everyone to be properly tested, say, every five years. This would help to update and improve drivers' skills and remove incompetent drivers.

Obama's failures

EDITOR: There is no way that the Republicans ran a dishonest, fear-mongering campaign against President Barack Obama. Quite the contrary, the campaign against most Republican candidates was dishonest, fear-mongering and, in the case of Mitt Romney, demeaning of a man of the utmost integrity. Since the president couldn't defend his record of failure, his only option attacking his opponent's character. And attack he did.
