State agriculture secretary Karen Ross last week commended Petaluma FFA members for winning a national title in Indianapolis.
Team members Alexandra Gambonini, Francesca Gambonini, Regina Pozzi and Jessie Jones won the top award for the Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development event last month at the national FFA convention. As a result, the team will represent the U.S. in international competition at the Royal Highland Livestock Show in Edinburgh, Scotland next June.
It marks the second time in three years that Petaluma FFA will have a team competing in Edinburgh.
“What a fantastic achievement!” Ross wrote in the “Planting Seeds” blog post hosted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture website.
Cost of turkey dinner up only slightly this year
A traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings for 10 people will cost an average of $49.48 this Thanksgiving, an increase of less than 1 percent from last year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
The federation’s 27th annual informal Thanksgiving price survey found the biggest ticket item — a 16-pound turkey — would cost $22.23, or about $1.39 a pound. That was an increase of 4 cents a pound.
Other ingredients include sweet potatoes, rolls, stuffing, fresh cranberries, green peas, milk and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. The federation’s 155 volunteer shoppers checked prices at grocery stores in 35 states.
“At just under $5 per person, the cost of this year’s meal remains a bargain,” federation President Bob Stallman said.
Advance sign-ups for grower workshops
The Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioners Office will hold its annual grower workshops Dec. 6 at the Santa Rosa Veterans Building, 1351 Maple Ave.
Speakers at the Certified Private Applicator Workshop will include county Supervisor Shirlee Zane, Agricultural Commissioner Tony Linegar and county Farm Bureau Executive Director Lex McCorvey.
The event will be held from 9 to 11:50 a.m. The cost is $10. Registration is required by Nov. 30.
