While allegedly making hash oil in his downtown Santa Rosa apartment, a young man suffered minor burns when the effort caused a flash fire, police and fire officials reported.

Eric Michael Weems, 22, suffered burns to his face. He was treated and taken to jail.

The fire set off sprinklers in the new complex at Tenth Street and Healdsburg Avenue.

An alarm company called to report a possible fire, bringing Santa Rosa firefighters to the complex at about 10:15 p.m.

Police found Weems had set up a small lab for making hash oil from marijuana, said Santa Rosa police Sgt. Lisa Banayat.

"It's highly flammable," Banayat said.

Weems was arrested on suspicion of making drugs and failing to register a change of address as a sex offender, both felonies. He remained in jail Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
