A lifelong gift

EDITOR: A year ago, I wrote a letter to the editor suggesting a gift for every child who doesn't already have one: a library card and a visit to the library to check out books that they will enjoy. I was told by the children's librarian at the Coddingtown branch that the day after my letter appeared, they had triple the usual new applications for library cards for children.

My parents and I were immigrants, and we came to this country not knowing a word of English. They took me to the library every week, and I checked out as many books as I could. My love of reading persists to this day. As a retired pediatrician, I would love to see all children experience this. So, again, let me urge everyone to give the gift of reading to a child they love. It will pay endless dividends.
