<p><b>A lifelong gift</b></p><p>EDITOR: A year ago, I wrote a letter to the editor suggesting a gift for every child who doesn't already have one: a library card and a visit to the library to check out books that they will enjoy. I was told by the children's librarian at the Coddingtown branch that the day after my letter appeared, they had triple the usual new applications for library cards for children.</p><p>My parents and I were immigrants, and we came to this country not knowing a word of English. They took me to the library every week, and I checked out as many books as I could. My love of reading persists to this day. As a retired pediatrician, I would love to see all children experience this. So, again, let me urge everyone to give the gift of reading to a child they love.
