Clearlake police on Monday continued to look for a man who held up a grocery store Sunday morning and fired three shots during the crime, reported Lt. Tim Celli.

Celli said the robber wore camouflage clothes, a baseball cap and a black face mask and was carrying a .22-caliber rifle.

He walked into Ray's Food Place at about 7:30 a.m. and demanded cash, telling a clerk he need the money for food, and fired a shot into the ceiling.

"There was some indication that he was doing this to feed himself or feed his family, that he didn't want to hurt anybody," Celli said.

When the robber started to leave, another employee jumped him, trying to wrestle the rifle away. But the robber held on to the gun and as he left he fired twice, shattering windows.

Two police dogs tracked the man's path to Dam Road, but the scent ended abruptly and police suspect he got into a car.

Celli called the robbery very unusual for Clearlake and asked anyone with information to contact officers at 994-8251. Callers may remain anonymous.
