The Sonoma County Coroner's Office was still working Friday morning to locate the family of a 63-year-old Bodega man who was killed in a vehicle crash late Thursday afternoon.
The name of the man was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, the coroner's office said.
The man died at the scene of the 5:45 p.m. crash on Bodega Avenue north of Petaluma when he crossed the oncoming lane and off the opposite side of the road near Skillman Lane, the CHP said.
Authorities said his GMC pickup struck a mailbox, then sheered off a telephone pole before crashing through a fence.
It was not clear what caused him to lose control of the pickup, which was traveling around the speed limit of 55 mph, the CHP said.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor, but has not been ruled out, authorities said.
