Paul Hobbs acquires Napa Valley vineyard
Paul Hobbs Winery of Sebastopol has acquired a 90-acre vineyard in the Coombsville AVA in Napa Valley, the company announced.
The property was first planted to Bordeaux varietals more than a decade ago, and has been a source for producers such as Cardinale, Merus, Chappellet and Paul Hobbs Winery.
“Tourmaline is an exceptional vineyard with a history of producing high-quality fruit,” Hobbs said. “I like Coombsville due to the distinctive soils, including Guenoc rock outcrop complex and Sobrante loam, and reputation for growing quality cabernet sauvignon.”
Zepponi & Company, the wine industry mergers and acquisitions advisory firm, served as the financial advisor to GI Partners and negotiated the sale to Paul Hobbs Winery.
Davenport joins Windsor Oak Vineyards
Windsor Oak Vineyards of Healdsburg, a longtime grape supplier, has hired winemaker Margaret Davenport, who formerly worked at Clos du Bois Winery.
Davenport’s first wines from the 2012 vintage, an unoaked chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, are due to be released in March.
The winery’s 710-acre estate, located in both the Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill AVAs, has supplied grapes to 35 wineries, including Sonoma-Cutrer, Flowers, Pax, Pali and Sojourn, estate owner Bob Stein said.
“We’ve been making a small amount of wine from what we felt were the best blocks on the property and selling it to our friends, but we’re ready now to start getting our story out to a wider audience.” Stein said in a statement. “The addition of Margaret Davenport to our team is a significant step in that direction.”
Pott, Rolland join Jericho Canyon Vineyard
Jericho Canyon Vineyard of Calistoga appointed winemakers Aaron Pott and Michel Rolland to its winemaking team, the company announced.
In November, Pott was named a winemaker of the year by “Food & Wine” magazine. He brings decades of experience at wineries around the world and a penchant for creating cabernets that are true to their terroir, the company said.
“Jericho Canyon is poised to become one of the great estates of Napa Valley,” Pott said. “It is a dragon slumbering in its cave atop a horde of treasure that is about to be awakened and unleashed.”
Rolland hails from Paris and has joined Jericho Canyon as a consultant.
