Live music at The Locals; Three Kings Day at Gloria Ferrer

Fun at The Locals: Friday, Dec. 28, The Locals, which opened at 90 Mark West Springs Road in Santa Rosa on Nov. 2, is hosting its first live performance from 6 to 8 p.m.
Scott and Aleena, a local duo that specializes in all manner of jazz, are featured at the inaugural event.
The Locals, the second restaurant for Dave and Mary Kenady, who also own Center St. Cafe in Healdsburg, serves breakfast all day, along with lunch and dinner. The new eatery is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Beer and wine are available, with special attention paid to the selection of beers.
This performance is the first of what will be many live performances.

Gloria Ferrer Celebrates Three Kings Day: On Sunday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 6 p.m., Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards celebrates the Epiphany with “El Dia de los Reyes Magos,” or Three Kings Day. The afternoon event features a performance; Rosca bread, a Spanish holiday tradition; sparkling wine for grown-ups and hot chocolate for children.
The performance takes place in the caves.
Cost is $15. Children 12 and under may attend for free. This popular tradition usually sells out well in advance, so get your tickets soon or risk losing out.

Last meal of the year: If Santa didn't take you to Paris for Christmas, you can take yourself to Santa Rosa's Bistro 29 (620 Fifth St.) for New Year's dinner and wake up feeling like you've been transported. The sweet little restaurant is like a trip to France every time you walk through the door.
The New Year's Eve menu begins with a mini gougere, which is followed by parsnip and chestnut soup with candied chestnuts, anise brown butter and an onion marmalade brioche tartine.
For your second course, you'll choose from chilled asparagus with grilled bread, warm Dungeness crab salad and a poached egg; a crispy duck confit cake with chanterelle mushroom broth and mache salad or a layered vegetable terrine with sauce vierge , black truffles and beet greens. For entrees, there's a choice of filet mignon with daube ravioli, wilted greens and cabernet jus; grilled quail with black truffle cream, duchess potatoes and braised leeks or pan-seared scallops with salsify puree, roasted shallots, sauteed monkfish liver and Cognac cream.
There's a trio of desserts, a chocolate covered raspberry sorbet bon bon; a chocolate cream puff and a warm chocolate fondant cake with salted caramel whipped cream.
Cost is $65; add an additional $35 for wine pairings with each course.

More New Year's Eve Options: Most restaurants are open and very busy on New Year's Eve so if you have a favorite destination, call and make your reservations pronto. If you want to do something a bit different, there are plenty of options.
In Sebastopol, you can go out to dinner and still make it to Aubergine (755 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol) for their Artists & Models ball, featuring live models and other performers, exotic dancers and the evening's very special guest, artist Stanley Mouse.
Advance tickets are $20; at the door, you'll pay $25. The price includes a raffle ticket. Top prize? An autographed Stanley Mouse poster.
Things get started at 9 p.m. and you must be 21 and older to attend. Tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com.
In Petaluma, two options piqued our interest. The opening performance of “A Couple of Blaguards” takes place at Cinnabar Theater (3333 Petaluma Blvd. N., Petaluma), starting at 9 p.m. The play is an account of the McCourt Brothers' lives in impoverished Ireland and their escape to America. If this sounds rather grim, not to worry. This rollicking tale finds the ferocious humor in poverty and strife.
There will be sparkling wine at midnight.

The Petaluma Sons of Italy are hosting a New Year's Eve dinner and dance from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Lucchesi Community Center (320 N. McDowell Blvd., Petaluma). The evening begins with a no-host bar and a dinner of prime rib and raviolis follows at 7:30 p.m. Dancing to Showcase kicks off at 9 p.m. and a continental breakfast will be served at midnight.
No tickets will be sold at the door so if you want join in, call 762-6002. Cost is $60.
Finally, New Year's Eve usually focuses on adult fun but you don't have to leave the kids out. On New Year's Eve day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Charles M. Schulz Museum (2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa) celebrates “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown” with balloon drops, hands-on crafts and a root beer toast. The balloon drop takes place at noon and the toasts at noon and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
Breakfast 2013: For your first meal of the new year, Ms. Mouthful recommends K & L Bistro (119 Main St., Sebastopol, 823-6614), which serves brunch just one day a year, New Year's Day, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Part of what makes it our top choice is that whenever something is done just once a year, its bright, fresh, fun and quite often irresistible.
Chefs Karen and Lucas Martin's menu highlights include a whole carved ham with cranberry mostarda; cioppino; Atlantic cod cakes with remoulade and much more.
Reservations, though not essential, are highly recommended, as this has become a popular tradition in Sebastopol.
2013 Preview: There's a lot on the horizon for the new year, including more than a dozen crab feeds in January, Lunar New Year and Tet celebrations, Winter Wine Road '13 and so much more. Ms. Mouthful says happy new year, hold your family and friends close, wish your enemies a good year and get ready for the Year of the Snake.
