Fire forces evacuation of Calistoga apartment building

<p>A downtown Calistoga apartment building was evacuated during Wednesday's cold morning after a fire broke out in one of seven adjacent units, authorities said.</p><p>Three apartments were damaged, including one that was gutted, in the blaze, which started just after 12:30 a.m. at 1312 Spring St.</p><p>The cause of the fire remained under investigation.</p><p>The fire was traced to a bedroom, but the damage was so extensive the origin of the fire could not be determined, Fire Chief Steve Campbell said.</p><p>It was unclear if anyone was in the bedroom when the fire started, partly because residents didn't speak English and because evacuees left, he said. Fire officials were planning followup interviews, he said.</p><p>The apartment was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Campbell said. Two nearby apartment units suffered smoke and water damage.</p><p>Several units remained evacuated until electrical and gas service could be restored, Campbell and others said.</p><p>Police opened the community center three blocks away to serve as an emergency shelter, although no one needed to stay overnight, Red Cross spokeswoman Ellen Maremont Silver said.</p>
