The Petaluma Fire Department received 40 medical and 78 fire or other emergency calls from Dec. 17 through Dec. 31. Here are some of the incidents:
TUESDAY, DEC. 18
8:03 a.m. — Firefighters were called out to 1902 Linnet Ln. for a report of an accident between a car and a pedestrian. A 78-year-old woman was down in the street when firefighters arrived. She was taken to Petaluma Valley Hospital.
9:40 a.m. — Units went to 1134 Baywood Dr. for a building fire. Smoke was showing in a storage structure attached to a two-story apartment complex. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, then the cause was investigated. It appeared to have started in a metal waste can used for disposing oily rags, where heat likely built up as the rags decomposed.
2:53 p.m. — Firefighters were called out to 110 Ellis Street for a report of an accident between a vehicle and a pedestrian. A van had struck two girls who had run out into the road. One had fled the scene; the other was lying in the roadway. Her injuries appeared to include fractures in her lower leg, injuries to her head, and a possible arm fracture. She was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The driver of the vehicle was emotionally upset but uninjured.
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 19
9:43 p.m. — Firefighters were called out to 5070 Lakeville Highway, where a barn was reported on fire. A building representative said the fire was out when firefighters arrived. A small rubbish fire had started inside the building but was extinguished by the time firefighters got there.
THURSDAY, DEC. 20
5:47 p.m. — Firefighters were called out to 4480 Bodega Ave. for a vehicle accident. They arrived to find a Wilmar firefighter performing CPR. The patient was moved to the ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.
FRIDAY, DEC. 21
2:57 p.m. — Firefighters were called out for an accident on East Washington Street at Ely Boulevard South between two vehicles. The occupants of one vehicle complained of neck pain and were taken to the hospital.
7:15 p.m. — Units went to 406 Washington Street to respond to a report of a vehicle fire. The vehicle had light smoke showing when firefighters arrived. They found that a small electrical relay was burnt next to the battery. The driver was arranging for a tow.
SATURDAY, DEC. 22
11:28 a.m. — Firefighters were called out to 80 Washington Street to help animal control officers rescue a bird. They arrived at the Golden Eagle Shopping Center to learn there was a wild bird stuck in a tree. Firefighters used a 100-foot aerial ladder to access the bird which was caught in the tree with fishing line. The bird was cut free, put in a rescue container, and taken the an animal rescue facility to receive medical attention.
4:22 p.m. — Units went to Highway 37 at Lakeville Highway to assist with an accident. One vehicle had rear-ended another and there was moderate damage. Two victims were taken to the hospital.
SUNDAY, DEC. 23
3:55 a.m. — Firefighters were called out to 216 Jeffrey Street for a report of a vehicle fire. It had been extinguished by the Police Department, who had taken the male driver into custody. It appears the rear tire was being spun and created heat that caused the tire to blow out. Then, sparks were created from the spinning rim. A bystander required medical attention.
