A man's body wrapped in a blanket was discovered Monday night in the trunk of a car parked along Petaluma Hill Road next to Sonoma State University, Sonoma County sheriff's officials said.
The condition and location of the body is "clearly suspicious," Lt. Glenn Lawrence said.
Authorities as of Monday night had not identified the man and didn't know how he died.
The car was connected to a person Santa Rosa police were searching for to question about a crime reported Friday, Lawrence said.
He declined to say what that crime was.
At about 6:30 p.m. Monday, a deputy stopped to check the car because it was in a no-parking zone along southbound Petaluma Hill Road just north of East Cotati Avenue, Lawrence said. The tree-lined stretch is on SSU's eastern edge.
A check of the license plate alerted the deputy to the Santa Rosa crime link, and the deputy saw evidence in the car possibly connected to that crime, Lawrence said. He would not specify what the deputy saw.
The car's trunk was unlocked and inside the deputy found the body wrapped in a blanket, he said.
Detectives closed Petaluma Hill Road between East Cotati Avenue and Rohnert Park Expressway for the investigation.
