A Lake County man suffered major injuries in a car crash near Calistoga that closed Highway 29 for about an hour Tuesday evening, the CHP said.

A driver traveling north on Highway 29 north of Palisades Road lost control of his pickup truck while crossing a bridge, CHP Officer Jake Ramos said.

The truck driven by Matthew Hollibaugh, 24, of Middletown, clipped the side of the bridge, then veered off the road, crossed a creek and crashed into a stone pillar of a gate to a nearby home.

Hollibaugh was trapped in the truck and was removed by Cal Fire crews, Ramos said. He was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

"He's lucky to be alive," Ramos said.
