Fire destroyed a Big River home Sunday, displacing a family.

The fire broke out about 12:15 p.m., four miles up Comptche-Ukiah Road, said firefighter Sally Swan of the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find the single-story house ablaze, Swan said. The occupants were not home at the time, she said.

The cause of the fire was not known but was believed to have started around a woodstove, Swan said.
