RALEIGH, N.C. - An attorney who worked in then-Gov. Jim Martin's administration in the 1980s is returning to North Carolina state government as a top leader in the Department of Public Safety.

Department Secretary Kieran Shanahan announced Friday that Lorrie Dollar will be his chief deputy secretary for administration. The department oversees the state prison system, Highway Patrol, emergency management and juvenile justice matters. Officials say she'll make $120,000 annually.

Dollar previously worked in what was then the Department of Human Resources and Department of Correction and once served as chief deputy state auditor. She worked in private practice in recent years.

Dollar is married to state Rep. Nelson Dollar of Wake County.
