A 23-year-old Santa Rosa man suspected of drunken driving was killed Saturday after crashing head-on into an embankment, CHP officials said.
Mark Edward Church was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed at about 2 a.m. Saturday on Covey Road where it dead-ends at Trenton Road, CHP Officer Marcus Hawkins said.
Church reportedly had been drinking with a group of friends at a bar in Forestville, Hawkins said.
Although they had a designated driver, Church took the keys and left in the car, leaving his friends to walk home, he said.
"His friends tried to take the keys, but he left before they could intervene," Hawkins said.
While walking, they came upon Church in the crashed 2002 Dodge Durango, airbags deployed, about a mile from the bar, Hawkins said.
Paramedics pronounced Church dead at the scene.
The Dodge was registered to Church's fiancé.
