A 43-year-old Fresno man was arrested Monday on suspicion of assaulting an officer and committing vandalism after he was refused breakfast at a Fort Bragg Inn, police officials said.
Witnesses told police that a man, later identified as Matthew Walter Reinhardt, walked into the Glass Beach Inn on Main Street just before 8 a.m. and demanded breakfast, Police Chief Scott Mayberry said.
Reinhardt confronted the inn's owners and then went outside and began punching the rear window of a parked car, Mayberry said.
Officers arrested Reinhardt and took him to the Mendocino Coast Hospital to treat injuries Reinhardt received when punching the window, he said.
But as Reinhardt got out of the patrol car, he tried to grab an officer's throat, he said.
The officer tackled Reinhardt to the ground and restrained him, Mayberry said.
Reinhardt was treated at the hospital and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, assault on a police officer, threats and resisting a police officer, Mayberry said.
