Police officers pulled a distraught man out of a car outside Santa Rosa Plaza on Tuesday, temporarily blocking the street outside the downtown mall.
The man was flailing and pounding the steering wheel in the driver's seat of a silver Dodge sedan at the traffic light on B Street in front of the mall's main 4th Street entrance, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Clay Van Artsdalen said.
Two city employees were behind the man in separate cars and called authorities at about 3 p.m. after observing his behavior, Van Artsdalen said.
"He was screaming, yelling, lacking any sense," Van Artsdalen said.
A block of B Street was closed for about a half hour as officers tried to coax the man out of the car. Officers eventually broke a window of the car and got the man out, Van Artsdalen said.
Emergency responders restrained the man onto a stretcher and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Sonoma County Humane Society staff took the man's small dog, he said.
