Local jazz musician and bandleader Peter Welker was the first one to present live music next to the Petaluma River on a regular basis back in 1996. Over the years, he has played at virtually every restaurant next to the river turning basin. The trumpet player-composer-arranger recently announced he will be playing at a new venue with his band on Friday evenings this summer. Welker and his sextet, with vocalist Deborah Winters, will be playing their 18th summer of Jazz on the River on the patio of Graffiti restaurant, 101 Second St. The music will start June 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., and will continue into the fall. Welker’s band is signed to a major jazz label and has released three CDs on the label. He also produced Winters’ CD, “Lovers After All.” Welker’s group started at the former River House restaurant on Weller Street, then moved across the river to the Apple Box, then to Theatre Square outside Tres Hombres and last summer at the now-shuttered Riverside Bistro.
