A structure fire at an apartment complex in Fortuna left one resident injured and an apartment completely destroyed, responders said.

The injured dweller was taken to Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna, said Sgt. Jason Kadle of the Fortuna Police Dept.

Two or three other apartments in the complex at 311 9th St. were damaged by smoke and heat, said Jim Senestraro, engineer with Company 5 of Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department.

“It appeared to be a total loss to the one apartment,” Senestraro said. “It was thoroughly gutted by fire, totally uninhabitable.”

The call came in around 8:50 a.m., and the fire was contained within 15 minutes of the firefighters' arrival, Senestraro said.
