The 2-year-old smelled of alcohol. Tests at Ukiah Valley Medical Center showed he was under the influence of methamphetamine and had life-threatening amounts of alcohol in his tiny body.
Mendocino County sheriff's deputies were called to the hospital late Thursday night to investigate a suspected case of child abuse, a sheriff's official reported Tuesday.
The child's grandmother told deputies she'd picked the boy up from his mother's home. The child looked ill and became sick as she drove. When she smelled alcohol, she detoured to the hospital.
Deputies went to the boy's Philo home. They found the boy's mother, Samantha Delvalle, 22, and her boyfriend, Raymond Mabery, 21, both suspected of being drunk and high on drugs, said a sheriff's official.
A search of the home showed open bottles of alcohol and drug paraphernalia within reach of a child.
Child protective services staff are investigating the case, Lt. Greg Van Patten said. The child is now under the care of his biological father, he said.
Deputies arrested Delvalle and Mabery on suspicion of child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and drug intoxication.
They were booked into the Mendocino County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail each. Mabery was released Tuesday after posting bond, authorities said. Delvalle and Mabery are scheduled for a court hearing on March 19.
