Plan to remove Yosemite rental shops could change

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — The head of the National Park Service says there could be changes to a plan that would ban the rental of bicycles, horses and river rafts in an area of Yosemite National Park.

The San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/188nny8 ) says Jon Jarvis told a congressional hearing in Washington on Tuesday that his agency is studying alternatives that could allow those activities to continue.

A conservation plan released in January calls for taking out swimming pools, an ice rink and bike and horse rental shops from some park areas in a bid to reduce the human footprint.

The plan was attacked during a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Public Lands, with critics saying it would make the park less visitor-friendly.

Final plan details will be announced in December.
