Napa high school coach admits to possessing child pornography

A Napa man who worked as a professional photographer and high school wrestling coach was in custody Tuesday, suspected of sharing child pornography, Napa police said Tuesday.

Officers arrested Richard “Scott” Rachfal, 33, after searching his Fairfax Drive home Tuesday morning.

Rachfal admitted to having downloaded child pornography for about six years, police officials said. A news release stated he works as a part-time professional photographer. Online listings indicated he has a photography business in Napa County.

Police officials also said Rachfal was a wrestling coach at a Napa area high school.

Justin Siena High School Athletic Director Michael Fisher said Rachfal coached at the Napa school for five seasons.

“He is not a coach with us. He left Justin Siena in February or March of this year to be head wrestling coach at St. Helena (High School),” Fisher said.

Fisher declined to comment about Rachfal's arrest.

A tip last week to police about the computer files sparked the investigation, Lt. Debbie Peecook said.

Officers seized numerous computers from his house Tuesday. They reported finding digital files containing child pornography photos and video and evidence suggesting the man had shared some files, specifically on July 4 and 5.

Peecook said detectives still were assessing the number of the photos and videos and the ages of the children involved.

Investigators haven't determined if he created child pornography videos or took photos himself, officials said.

Detectives asked anyone with information to contact police investigator Todd Shulman at 257-9575.
