SONOMA COUNTY: Healdsburg's Badger Park voted best of community gardens by tourgoers
The Badger Park Community Garden, overseen by Kathryn Miller, emerged as the favorite during the annual Grateful Bed Garden Tour on Aug. 3-4.
Sponsored by the Sonoma County Regional Parks, the event spotlighted community gardens all over the county. Tour-goers were invited to vote for their favorite garden.
Miller has been tending the garden at Badger Park in Healdsburg for seven years, using the square-foot gardening method that involves dividing the garden into 4-foot squares with pathways between. Each square can be divided into many different sections.
The division allows for beds that have finished producing to be easily cleared, composted and replanted.
Second place went to the Healdsburg Senior Living Garden at 14725 Grove St.
Tony Fisher has helped residents create this nearly 6,000-square-foot food garden all from organic seed started in a greenhouse and then moved to the garden in mid-May. The garden is bountiful, with nearly 40 varieties of tomatoes, 20 varieties of squash and gourds and eight varieties of melons, peppers, eggplant.
The third place award was given to the Larson Park Community Garden, a brand new garden planted for the first time this year. It is located in a neighborhood park at 329 De Chene Ave. in Boyes Hot Springs in the Sonoma Valley.
