Did you see those lights in the sky?

An unusual formation of illuminated objects appeared in the night sky Saturday over Sonoma County, prompting nearly a dozen motorists in Petaluma to pull off the road and gawk at the display.

Jake Marble of Petaluma was heading south on Highway 101 sometime between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday when he saw what appeared to be a moving formation in the southern sky that resembled the Big Dipper constellation of stars.

The lighted orbs appeared to be flying at the typical height of an airplane, although they did not appear to be typical aircraft, Marble said.

He and his wife exited at Petaluma Boulevard South and parked, joining a throng of drivers who stopped to watch the mysterious display.

“It was almost a scene from a movie. People had pulled off the road haphazardly and were looking up, amazed at what was happening,” Marble said.

The small flickering lights appeared from above the Quarry Heights hill in the southwestern sky, traveled to the southeast toward the moon and disappeared, Marble said.

The 10 to 15 illuminated objects appeared to have orange cores and looked about the size of other stars in the sky, he said.

“I'm not a UFO guy. I wasn't looking for that to happen, and if there weren't already so many people pulled over I would have just gone home,” Marble said.

An FAA spokesman reached late Monday said there was no unusual aircraft activity in the area.
