San Jose council approves measure to shoot wild pigs

SAN JOSE — San Jose council members have approved a measure that allows residents to shoot wild pigs that have become a nuisance by ripping up lawns and golf course fairways.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/1gqbWVs) the council voted 8-3 on Tuesday to permit the shooting that will remain in effect for three months.

Councilman Johnny Khamis says it's not his intention to commit a pig genocide but he's concerned the pigs may attack residents.

Dozens of the 200-pound pigs have been spotted in South San Jose this fall. Some people have reported thousands of dollars in damage as the pigs try to dig up food under the grass.

Those who are thinking about shooting a pig has to obtain a depredation permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
