A La Carte: Bartenders, chefs compete

Book, dinner with Provencal theme

The Imaginists will host author Luke Barr in a reading of his new book, “Provence, 1970,” at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 461 Sebastopol Ave.

After the reading, chef Liza Hinman will serve a Provencal-style dinner at The Spinster Sisters, just across the street at 401 South A. St.

In the book, just released by Clarkson Potter, Barr tells the story of the dramatic friendships and rivalries that developed when M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard and other culinary icons gathered in Provence in the 1970s to debate the future of food in America.

The grandnephew of Fisher, Barr grew up in the Bay Area, graduated from Harvard University and now works as an editor at Travel + Leisure magazine. He lives in Brooklyn.

Stone Edge Farm inspires cookbook

John McReynolds, culinary director of Stone Edge Farm in Sonoma, will discuss his new book, “The Stone Edge Farm Cookbook,” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Readers' Books in Sonoma.

In his first book, McReynolds relates how he sources and uses local foods, many of them grown at the 16-acre estate that produces vegetables and Bordeaux-style red wines .

McReynolds was the founding chef and co-owner of Cafe La Haye in Sonoma for 10 years before joining Stone Edge Farm.

Backyard dinner helps Ceres project
