Pedro Toledo, a spokesman for the Redwood Community Health Coalition who has worked to get low-income children and families enrolled in government-funded health coverage, has been selected by a public online vote as the 2013 MillerCoors Líder of the Year.
The award brings a $25,000 grant for the coalition to implement a Latino leadership program. The coalition, which represents 16 health centers and clinics in Sonoma, Napa, Marin and Yolo counties, is a crucial health care outlet for 180,000 residents.
Toledo, who was among 12 Latino candidates nominated by local and national nonprofit groups, says he hopes to use the grant money to develop an educational program for parents.
Toledo, director of community and government relations for the health coalition, also serves as president of the Sonoma County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Since 2006, the MillerCoors Líderes program has sought to highlight the achievements of emerging leaders in Latino communities through the online public voting competition and a national advertising campaign.
