Video leads to arrest of Covelo robbery suspect

A Covelo man was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery on Sunday after he was identified using surveillance video from a nearby convenience store.

Mendocino County sheriff's deputies located Daniel Lucas Bowes, 29, hiding under a pile of clothes in a closet in his Little Lake Way home, Capt. Greg Van Patten said in a news release. A sawed-off shotgun and money believed to have been taken in the robbery was found nearby.

Van Patten said a man entered Hidden Oaks Convenience Store around 6:30 a.m. Sunday and demanded money from the clerk, threatening her with a shotgun. He was wearing a hoodie and concealed his face with a bandana.

In the course of the investigation, deputies showed the surveillance video to an employee of the Round Valley Indian Tribes, which operates the convenience store, and he recognized Bowes by his distinctive build and gait, Van Patten said.

Bowes was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, possession of a weapon and ammunition by a felon, possession of a prohibited short-barreled shotgun, and being armed while in commission of a felony. He was also arrested on a warrant for a separate probation violation.

He was held in the Mendocino County Jail with no bond set, Van Patten said.
