Lake County man arrested for allegedly torturing, killing dog

A Lake County man remained jailed Monday on $100,000 bail for allegedly killing his girlfriend's dog with his bare hands.

Dennis Michael Hector, 52, of Clearlake Oaks, admitted to using his fists to kill the dog, a 10-year-old Labrador retriever mix named Franklin, said Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Brooks.

Hector reportedly told deputies he killed the dog because it killed his parakeet. He said he'd warned his girlfriend he'd take action against the dog if it harmed his parakeet, which was allowed to fly freely around the home they shared, Brooks said. The dog only recently was allowed to stay at the residence, he said.

Deputies responding to the Friday morning incident were shaken by the cruelty inflicted on the dog, Brooks said.

They had responded to a phone call of a woman screaming on Shoreview Drive. They heard someone yelling, “Stop it! Don't!” Brooks reported.

When they knocked, the screaming stopped. No one answered their knocks, so deputies forced their way into the residence.

Once inside, they found a woman with blood on her pant legs. Hector had blood on his right hand, Brooks said.

The woman told deputies the blood was from her dog and directed them to a boat in the lake channel behind their house.

The woman told deputies Hector had thrown the animal into the lake and that she'd retrieved it and placed it in the boat. She also said Hector would not let her answer the door when deputies knocked.

Hector told deputies he did not mean to kill the dog but also didn't think it was wrong to kill a dog if it killed another pet, Brooks said.

Hector was arrested on suspicion of maliciously and intentionally torturing and killing an animal, subjecting an animal to needless suffering and cruelty, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and destroying or concealing evidence.
