Two teens arrested in beating atop Petaluma parking garage

Petaluma police arrested two young men Saturday night after the beating of a 16-year-old boy on the roof of a downtown parking garage.

The victim, whose name was withheld by police, was hospitalized with serious injuries, but was expected to survive, Sgt. Andrew Urton said.

Witnesses told police that Joseph Palisano, 18, of Petaluma punched the victim while they were on the top floor of the Keller Street garage. The victim was knocked to the ground.

“Palisano kicked the victim in the head repeatedly while the victim was on the ground,” Urton said in a news release. “When the victim finally stood up he was again punched by Palisano causing the victim to strike his head on the cement when he fell.”

Palisano then fled the scene, Urton said.

Friends of the victim called 911 and began driving their friend to Petaluma Valley Hospital because of his head wounds.

Witnesses said Zackery Fortune, 19, stopped the vehicle before it could leave the parking garage.

“Fortune threatened the victim and told him not to contact the police,” Urton said.

The youth was later transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital because of the severity of his injuries.

Palisano was later arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury. He remained at Sonoma County Jail on $60,000 bail Tuesday.

Fortune was booked on suspicion of attempting to dissuade a victim and violating probation. He was being held without bail.

Police in Petaluma arrested Fortune in April in connection with the theft of $22,000 in gift cards intended for a Petaluma school fundraiser. Fortune and two other men were found with about 650 stolen gift cards, police said.
