OAKLAND — Police were searching for a man Wednesday in connection with the apparent carjacking and kidnapping of a driver and a teenage girl outside a supermarket that triggered an Amber Alert.
Roy McCamey, 54, of Oakland matches the description of a man who stole items inside the Safeway in the Oakland Hills and was involved in Tuesday's incident, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.
The apparent carjacking occurred in the parking lot when a man armed with a knife commandeered a red, four-door sedan with an older man inside and a 13-year-old girl sitting in the back seat, Watson said.
It prompted police to release a surveillance video and issue a statewide Amber Alert that remained in effect for the vehicle with California license plates 6JFM648.
Police initially described the vehicle as a red or burgundy 2001 Infiniti QX3 SUV, but that vehicle and its owner have been located on the East Coast, Watson said.
Police have not received any missing person reports involving a missing man or teenage girl. Witnesses told police it did not appear the attacker and victims knew each other.
"There's always the possibility the suspect has a relationship with people in the car," Watson said. "But we have to stay on point and treat this as a carjacking and kidnapping that took place.
"There are unanswered questions and we need those answers," she added.
