Santa Rosa DUI checkpoint set for Saturday

Santa Rosa police will conduct a checkpoint overnight Saturday looking for drunken drivers and motorists without driver’s licenses.

The checkpoint will be from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

Police say the deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is proven to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol- or drug-involved crashes.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and checking for proper licensing, with the goal of delaying motorists only momentarily.

Police said in a statement announcing the checkpoint that marijuana has shown recently to be in the systems of impaired drivers at a rate slightly more than alcohol, 7.4 percent to 7.3 percent.

Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
