Marin Sun Farms now can process certified-organic meats at the Petaluma slaughterhouse it took over a year ago.

The company announced Monday that its facility on Petaluma Boulevard North has been certified for organic operations. That certification allows “organically raised livestock to be harvested, processed, packaged, and brought to market within 50 miles of San Francisco, a feat that was previously not possible,” the company said in a press release.

“The USDA organic certification of our last remaining Bay Area slaughterhouse completes the necessary, and previously missing, link required in the flow of certified organic livestock from pasture to plate,” said David Evans, founder and CEO of Marin Sun Farms.

The slaughterhouse processes beef, hogs, lambs and goats.

Marin Sun Farms reopened the former Rancho Feeding Corp. slaughterhouse in April 2014 after it had been shuttered amid a massive meat recall and an investigation that led to criminal charges against its two owners and two employees.
