Sonoma County, which last year gained national attention for soaring apartment rents, now is getting a reputation as one the “hottest housing markets” in the U.S.

The county ranked fifth among metropolitan areas based upon views of property listings in comparison to the number of such listings on the Realtor.com website in March.

Among 200 housing markets, the only four communities that ranked higher than the county were Waco, Texas; New Orleans, La.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Denver, Co.

The county, often referred to as the Santa Rosa metro area, also ranked third among communities based upon how quickly properties were selling.

Homes sold in the county in March stayed on the market a median 32 days, according to Realtor.com. San Jose ranked first at 22 days and San Francisco second at 26 days.

Ten California communities made the top 20 for fewest days of homes on the market. They include: Vallejo-Fairfield, seventh; Los Angeles, eighth; San Diego, 10th; Santa Cruz, 11th; Oxnard, 14th; Modesto, 19th; and Sacramento, 20th.
