SAN FRANCISCO — Uber is planning to renovate the former Sears building in Oakland for use as its East Bay office in 2017.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1OS71Nv) company officials said Wednesday that extensive renovations were coming to the seven-story building, which Uber purchased at an undisclosed price from developer Lane Partners.

Sears had sold the property to Lane Partners in late 2014 for $24.25 million. The building is now called Uptown Station.

Uber and Lane Partners are working with architecture firm Gensler on a $40 million renovation of the structure, which was damaged in a 1989 earthquake. Uber expects this expansion of its San Francisco headquarters will employ up to 3,000 people.

The company is also moving forward with plans for a two-building campus in San Francisco's Mission Bay.
