Harvest has started in Sonoma County, according to growers, as grapes have been picked this week to go into sparkling wine. Napa County started July 28.

J Vineyards and Winery started their harvest on Monday with pinot gris and chardonnay fruit from the Russian River Valley, according to the Sonoma County Winegrowers, a trade group representing local growers.

This year's harvest start is four days later than 2015, which started on July 29. The 2014 harvest started on July 30.

Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards in Sonoma picked early Tuesday with 34 tons of pinot noir grapes. Iron Horse Vineyards in Sebastopol intends to pick on Thursday. Growers said this year's crop will be lighter than average but greater than last year.
