One day after allowing shoppers to return, Safeway today will officially reopen the former G&G stores in Santa Rosa and Petaluma under its own brand.

The Pleasanton-based supermarket chain said the stores will operate from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. each day. Opening day highlights will include donations made to the Committee on the Shelterless in Petaluma and to Social Advocates for Youth and the Redwood Empire Food Bank in Santa Rosa.

G&G sold its business and closed its doors late last month after 53 years in operation. Safeway offered jobs to G&G’s 250 employees and spent the last three weeks preparing to reopen the two stores.

Safeway operates more than 270 stores in Northern California, Nevada and Hawaii. Along with the G&G stores, the company this year opened supermarkets in the Bay Area communities of Pacifica, Walnut Creek, Oakland and San Jose.
