Power outage closes Santa Rosa Junior College main campus

Santa Rosa Junior College closed most of its main campus Thursday afternoon after a power outage struck central Santa Rosa.

The outage affected buildings from Santa Rosa City Hall to the Sonoma County government complex and Hall of Justice, said PG&E spokeswoman Deanna Contreras.

More than 1,100 customers lost power shortly after 2 p.m. when an underground cable failed at 450 Sonoma Avenue, she said. Power was restored to all customers about 4:30 p.m.

PG&E was investigating whether the outage was caused by Thursday’s storm.

The electricity failure forced the closure of much of the junior college campus on Mendocino Avenue. Thursday evening classes there also were canceled, with the exception of those held at the Burdo Culinary Arts Center, said college spokeswoman Ellen Maremont Silver.

The Shone Farm campus also was closed Thursday due to roadway flooding around the Forestville site.

Students, staff and faculty were advised to check the college’s main web page and its social media sites Friday morning for an update on the status of classes.
