MONTREAL- Ride-hailing service Uber is backing down on a threat to shutter its operations in Quebec this weekend.

The San Francisco-based company announced Friday that it will not pull the plug after all because it hopes to reach a deal with the province's new transport minister in the coming months.

Uber Quebec general manager Jean-Nicolas Guillemette said there is an opportunity for constructive dialogue to seek a lasting solution for riders and drivers.

Uber is at odds with a provincial requirement that its drivers undergo 35 hours of training just like cab operators, instead of 20 hours as they have been doing.

The company said the time it will take to phase in those rules will allow both sides to negotiate.
