If you see or suspect someone of starting a fire, the California Department of

Forestry has plugged in its new statewide arson tip line.

Forestry officials are appealing to the public for help in curbing and

catching arsonists by dialing 1-800-468-4408. Use of the confidential number

could lead to the arrest and conviction of wildland arsonists.

The hot line was initiated because of the recent rash of fires throughout

the state. The possible reward for arson conviction information is $50,000.

''Arsonists set their fires where they will do the most harm,'' said

department Director Richard Wilson. ''That's why we've got to do everything we

can to stop them.''

Callers should provide a physical description of a suspected arsonist, auto

license number, the time the individual was seen in the area of a fire, and

other information to help investigators.
