Talk on science of wine

Get inside the chemistry and science of wines and winemaking with UC Santa Cruz professor Phil Crews.

Crews will be speaking Thursday at Sonoma State University on the scientific aspects of winemaking and how consulting companies have helped winemakers create award-winning vintages.

He also will present an overview of some recent advances in sensory evaluation of winemaking technology and explore the left-brain versus right-brain approaches to creating the complex beverage, which is comprised of many organic and inorganic compounds.

Crews is a chemistry and biochemistry professor at UC Santa Cruz. He also is the owner and winemaker of Capitola's Pelican Ranch Winery.

The public is invited to attend his lecture, which is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Weill Hall. Tickets are required for the free event and can be obtained at http://tinyurl.com/kbcovqw.
