A man who had been stabbed twice in the torso near the Ukiah Municipal Airport early Tuesday made his way to a phone at a nearby bus stop to call for help, Mendocino County sheriff's officials said.
He may have been trying to buy drugs when he was stabbed, according to deputies.
Around 4:30 a.m., the 24-year-old Ukiah man called to report being stabbed while in the area of Laws Avenue, Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Caudillo said. Laws Avenue has numerous apartment buildings and is known to be a high-crime area, he said.
The man, whose name Caudillo did not disclose, lives in south Ukiah but not on Laws Avenue, the sergeant said. "It looks like he was attempting to buy narcotics," Caudillo said. The man was being treated at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and was expected to be released Wednesday, Caudillo said.
He did not provide detectives with a name for his assailant, Caudillo said. Detectives have not made an arrest or named a suspect.
