Bodega Bay crab boat towed to safety after engine trouble

A fishing boat that sent out a distress call Tuesday afternoon had to be towed back to Bodega Bay by a Coast Guard vessel.

The crew aboard the Amber Lynn were three miles off of Tomales Point Tuesday when a problem arose on the vessel that prevented fuel from getting to the engine. The crew, which had a full load of crab, sent out a call for help at 4:40 p.m.

After alerting any other available craft to the situation, the Coast Guard sent a stern tow boat to the Amber Lynn and towed it back to Bodega Bay, said Petty Officer Steven McDougal. The two boats arrived back at the dock at 7:15 p.m., he said.

The pump failure not only affected the fuel line, but the pump that brought fresh water to the catch.

"They potentially could have lost the crab," McDougal said.
