A Santa Rosa man who was killed in a New Year's Eve crash on Highway 1 near the Marin County community of Marshall apparently crossed double-yellow lines to try to pass other cars, the CHP said Thursday.
Florentino Chavez Garcia, 23, was pronounced dead Tuesday en route to Petaluma Valley Hospital, where both he and a passenger were taken.
Garcia was driving a Honda that was seen along with another car attempting to pass other vehicles traveling north on Shoreline Avenue at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, CHP Officer Andy Barclay said.
Garcia apparently was unable to merge back into his lane. The Honda flipped and landed in Marshall Creek, Barclay said.
The passenger, Eber Magana, also of Santa Rosa, was able to get out of the car with the help of people who came to his aid. Firefighters freed Garcia from the wreckage.
Magana was treated at Petaluma Valley for minor injuries and released.
Garcia's autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
