Greg Roman, the 49ers' offensive coordinator, interviewed this week for the head coaching vacancy at Penn State, according to a report today from CBS Sports.

Roman, who is a native of Ventnor City, N.J. -#8212; about 200 miles from State College, Pa. -#8212; has been for all three of Jim Harbaugh's years as the 49ers' coach and before that was on Harbaugh's staff at Stanford.

Roman has been a member of the coaching staffs of the Carolina Panthers (1995-2001), Houston Texans (2002-03) and Baltimore Ravens (2006-07).

The Penn State job came available when Bill O'Brien resigned to become coach of the NFL's Houston Texans. Early speculation about O'Brien's successor focused on University of Miami coach Al Golden, who took his name out of consideration, and then on Vanderbilt coach and Pennsylvania native James Franklin.
