Santa Rosa police were investigating a possible homicide in Roseland late Thursday night, following reports of someone being shot.
Police and sheriff's deputies converged on a single-family home on the 1200 block of Marble Street off Stony Point Road after an emergency call came in at 8:41 p.m. At about 9:50 p.m., about a dozen investigators entered the house.
Police confirmed that a man was dead inside the home but declined to give any specific details about how he died.
"We're treating it as a homicide, at this point," said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Mike Lazzarini.
Reports of the shooting brought police and deputies from across Santa Rosa. They cordoned off Marble Street near the intersection of Lazzini Avenue. Officers and deputies with flashlights were seen sweeping the street for evidence.
Police would not say whether any suspects were at large, but conversations heard over emergency dispatch radio indicated two suspects were in custody. A Sonoma County Animal Control officer brought several animals out of the home, including two dogs.
Neighbors said that the house has been the site of frequent trouble over the years and that officers have responded to the area numerous times. In November, an 18-year-old man was found stabbed just a bit further up Marble Street, near Gardner Avenue behind Cook Middle School. The man said he had been walking when seven or eight people approached him and questioned his gang affiliation before they attacked him.
None of the neighbors who were outside late Thursday reported hearing gunshots.
Kevin Wick said he was watching TV with his family when he heard sirens. He said police have come to the neighborhood before, but never like they did Thursday night. "In 20 years, I've never seen them put crime tape up," he said.
"It's hard when you're nervous for the kids to go out at night," said neighborhood resident Russell Moore.
It would be the third homicide in Santa Rosa in the past three weeks, with a 22-year-old homeless man stabbed to death behind the Central Library in downtown on Christmas Eve and a 20-year-old man shot outside a Piner Road apartment complex in the early hours of Dec. 31. There are suspects in custody in both cases.
In July, a 64-year-old Rincon Valley woman was strangled to death in her home. Her husband is facing murder charges.
