Burglary suspect arrested at Ukiah shopping center

A suspect in a string of Ukiah-area burglaries was apprehended Saturday following a vehicle and foot pursuit through a busy shopping center, Mendocino County Sheriff's officials said.

David Andrews, 28, of Ukiah, was ultimately apprehended at an Applebee's restaurant, where he was found hiding inside a locked storage room, officials said.

Deputies were waiting for Andrews after being tipped that he planned to deliver stolen property to someone in the parking lot of the Friedman's Home Improvement store, located in a shopping center along Highway 101, sheriff's officials said.

When a deputy approached Andrews, he got into his vehicle and sped away, nearly hitting a pedestrian and jumping a curb and grass median that separate the parking lot from Airport Park Boulevard, officials said.

Andrew's vehicle reached speeds of more than 50 mph before he turned into a parking area in another section of the shopping center, officials said.

Andrews then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot to Applebee's, officials said.

Inside Andrews' vehicle, deputies located items that had been reported stolen along with crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, burglary tools and a disguise used in several burglaries, sheriff's officials said.

Andrews is suspected of burglarizing multiple businesses in and around Ukiah, including the Highway 101 Bar - Grill and Pizza Etc. in Redwood Valley, officials said.

Andrews also was found to have two outstanding no-bail warrants related to felony drug violations. He was booked into the Mendocino County Jail, where he's being held without bail.
